abstract A rotary cam (94) and a pivotally mounted deflection arm (80) are used for each valve (36) of an internal combustion engine. The return beam (80) has a working or cam control surface (86), which surface includes a straight section (88) and a curved section (90). By relatively moving the cam (94) and the idler (80) so that the cam (94) acts against the appropriate parts of the cam control surface (86), the timing of opening and closing the valve is controlled as well as the lift and the opening time of the valve. The invention makes possible what is called here a five-stroke operation taking place in the following sequence: (1) intake, (2) decompression, (3) compression, (4) power, and (5) exhaust .
