abstract | Apparatus and method for mixing liquid fuel and air for an internal combustion engine (20), which apparatus includes an assembly (22) having a plurality of diffuser passageways (40) for accelerating the withdrawal of ambient air through the latter by the vacuum created by the engine and an associated system of fuel supply lines (26) and openings (52) in the venturis or diffusers for drawing fuel into the air. One of the venturis communicates unobstructed with the engine to provide fuel-air mixture for engine idling and a valve arrangement (78) effects the opening and closing of at least a few venturis in communication with the engine in response to increases and decreases in vacuum. An enlarged chamber (24') between the venturis and the motor receives the air-entrained fuel from these few venturis, reduces their speed, and separates by gravity the larger fuel drops from that fuel-entrained fuel. draft, which large drops of fuel would not burn quickly and completely in the engine. A recycling arrangement (178, 182) returns the separated droplets to the atomizing assembly. |
