A method of treating glaucoma or lowering intraocular pressure in a mammal, comprising administering locally to the eye of the mammal a selectively metabolized beta blocking compound of formula: $ (8,) $ where R may be a lower alkyl, lower hydroxyalkyl, lower alkynyl, aralkyl, or an ester-containing group and Ar may be a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. Due to the relatively long duration of action of these compounds in ocular fluids and the relatively short duration of action in the systemic circulation, these compounds are useful for the treatment of excessive intraocular pressure without causing systemic effects . |
