abstract Compounds represented by the following formula (1) are used as dichromatic colorants in a liquid crystal color display device. (FORMULA) For example, 4'-octylphenyl perylene-3,9-dicarboxylate, are provided. These compounds have the following characteristics: (1) they possess sufficient coloring power even in small quantities, (2) they have a large dichromatic ratio and present a strong contrast between the state in which voltage is applied to them and the state. where no voltage is applied, (3) they have sufficient compatibility with a liquid crystal, and (4) they have excellent durability, good stability, and do not deteriorate the quality of the display even when they are used for a long period of time.
