A process for preparing improved fluoroelastomeric film compositions comprising the steps of dissolving a fluoroelastomer gum selected from the group consisting of copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, and terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride, hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene solvent, adding a silane compound to the gum solution and polymerizing the fluoroelastomer gum with a silane in the absence of metal oxides. A method is also described making it possible to adhere compositions of fluoroelastomeric films devoid of metal oxides to substrates, this method comprising the steps consisting in dissolving fluoroelastomer gum in a solvent, in adding a silane compound to the gum solution, covering the substrate with the fluoroelastomer-silane gum solution, evaporating the solvent to obtain a film which adheres strongly to the substrate. Another method consists in first covering a substrate with a silane compound, then applying a solution of fluoroelastomer gum on the substrate covered with the silane, in evaporating the solvent to obtain a film which adheres strongly to the substrate. The fluoroelastomeric film compositions described above are also of a new type and can be used to coat a variety of substrates thereby obtaining new and useful articles. |
