abstract In a combustion engine, the operating medium which is preferably air is induced and compressed before the fuel supply and combustion takes place while performing work. In response to the engine load, a large adjustable portion of the maximum amount of air admitted to the engine at any time may escape without being compressed. Only the quantity of air temporarily required is compressed and supplied with fuel. In this way, the working volume of the motor is adjusted in response to the actual load. To obtain this result, an exhaust valve is incorporated in the engine for each working chamber which is designed to be open during a large adjustable part of the initial phase of compression of the engine operating environment.
