abstract |
A multilumen catheter (10) having passages (41-43) for the flow of gas, the enclosure of electrical leads and the transmission of fluids for injection or sampling. The gas transmitting lumen (42) also carries electrical leads (53) which extend to an electrical element (35) disposed within a passage-providing plug (45) located at a point spaced from the catheter's distal end. The plug blocks the entry of fluids into the catheter without at the same time interfering with the flow of gas therethrough. In one embodiment, the passage-providing plug (45) is at least partially pre-formed and is fitted into space (44) otherwise occupied by sections of adjacent lumens (42, 43), thereby allowing a relatively large electrical element (35) to be mounted within such space; in a second embodiment, the element (135) is mounted in a passage-providing plug (145) disposed within single lumen (142) and in a third embodiment, the element (235) is embedded in a passage-providing plug (245) which is formed in place. Methods for making the catheters are also disclosed. |
