Sterilized, preserved, stable mucine-containing solutions for use for application to sensitive human mucous membranes of the oral cavity, the nasal system, and the eye epithelium contain an oxidizing bactericide, in particular hydrogen peroxide, as preservative. Even at very small hydrogen peroxide concentrations, solutions remain bactericidal over prolonged periods such as 1-2 years. Mucine used is porcine gastric mucine or bovine salivary mucine or -to adjust the polar/non-polar properties- a mixture of both. The solutions have a viscosity of at the most 50 relative to water, as measured with an Oswald viscosimeter. The pronounced lubricating effect, combined with suitable viscosity, low surface tension and ability to coat and protect mucous membranes renders the solutions well suited as artificial salivas, ophthalmic solutions, and carriers for medicaments. |
