abstract The present embodiments relate generally to a method and apparatus of capturing and releasing magnetically activated cells. Embodiments include a microfluidic device capable of capturing a large array of magnetically functionalized cells and releasing any one specific captured cell without releasing the rest of the cells. Methods and devices according to embodiments provide an improvement over current microfluidic cell sorting approaches due to the use of a simple mechanism, which simultaneously allows for high selectivity, and high throughput potential.
