abstract A system includes a light source configured to illuminate a target site in a brain with a near infrared light having a wavelength from about 1000 nm to about 1700 nm. The system also includes a plurality of nanoparticle probes disposed at the target site, each of the nanoparticle probes may include: a core having a substantially spherical shape, a conductive shell disposed over the core, and an electrochromic polymer coating disposed over the conductive shell. The system may further include an image sensor configured to receive backscattered light from the plurality of nanoparticles illuminated by the near infrared light. The plurality of nanoparticle probes is configured to shift their backscattering spectrum in response to a change in an electrical field at the target site.
