abstract An optical system (100) is described comprising: an optical radiation source (1) configured to provide an optical input signal (IS); an optical device to be observed (3) having a first input (INC), a first band-pass output (OPC) associated with a first band- pass wavelength response, and/ or a first band-stop output (OEC) associated with a first band-stop wavelength response complementary to the first band-pass response; an optical reference device (2) having a second input (INR), a second band-pass output (OPR) associated with a second band-pass wavelength response, and/or a second band-stop output (OER) associated with a second band-stop wavelength response complementary to the second band-pass response; wherein: said optical devices (2, 3) are coupled together to form a cascade and one of said optical devices (2, 3) is connected to the optical radiation source (1) and the other among said optical devices (2, 3) is such as to provide an optical output signal (OSPC; OSEC). The system further comprises an optical detector (4) configured to convert the optical output signal (OSPC; OSEC) into an electrical measurement signal (SE) representative of an optical power of the optical output signal (OSpc; OSEC); a processing module (5) configured to evaluate deviations between said band-pass responses and/ or said band-stop responses based on the electrical measurement signal (SE) dependent on said optical power.
