abstract The present invention provides a process for preparing trimethylchlorosilane (M3) and methyltrichlorosilane (M1) by means of disproportionation of dimethyldichlorosilane (M2) in the presence of an Al 2 O 3 catalyst which prior to the disproportionation is activated with chlorosilane of formula (I), R x SiCl 4-x , in which the radicals R are independently selected from the group consisting of (i) hydrogen and (ii) C 1 -C 5 alkyl radical, and the index x takes the values 1, 2 or 3, wherein the dimethyldichlorosilane (M2) is used in the form of a silane mixture containing at least 80% by weight dimethyldichlorosilane (M2), with the difference to 100% comprising M1 and M3.
