abstract This variable-wavelength laser is provided with: gain regions and wavelength control regions that are alternately arranged along a direction of light propagation; diffraction gratings arranged so as to respectively correspond to the gain regions and the wavelength control regions; and a region that does not have a plurality of the aforementioned diffraction gratings, located at the end of an aforementioned gain region and/or the end of an aforementioned wavelength control region, at the boundary between an aforementioned gain region and an aforementioned wavelength control region. The length of the region that does not have the aforementioned diffraction gratings is 5% to 30% the length of the gain region or the length of the wavelength control region to which the the region that does not have the aforementioned diffraction gratings belongs.
