titleOfInvention | Optical amplifier |
abstract | Optical amplifiers in the prior art had the problem in which it was difficult, with a simple configuration, to perform a broadband gain variable operation while suppressing a noise index. An optical amplifier according to the present invention has a first excitation light coupler (ELC1), a first optical amplification medium (EDF1), a first optical switch (OSW1) that outputs an optical communication signal outputted from the first optical amplification medium (EDF1) to one of a first branch path (HGP) or a second branch path (LGP), and a second optical switch (OSW2) that transmits downstream the optical communication signal transmitted through the branch paths, wherein: the first branch path (HGP) has a second optical amplification medium (EDF2), a second excitation light coupler (ELC2) that combines the optical communication signal with excitation light in a direction toward the second optical amplification medium (EDF2), and a first gain equalizer (GEQ2); and the second branch path (LGP) has a third excitation light coupler (ELC3) that combines the optical communication signal with excitation light in a direction toward the first optical switch (OSW1), and a second gain equalizer (GEQ3). |
