abstract Disclosed are: a method for evaluating the cystine uptake ability of a cell having a step that brings selenocystine into contact with a cell and causes selenocystine to be taken up by the cell, a step for washing away the selenocystine that has not been taken up by the cell, and a step for crushing the cell and determining the selenocystine included in the cytoplasm; and a method for determining selenocysteine having a step for bringing selenocysteine into contact with a fluorescent dye that reacts specifically with selenocysteine to change the fluorescence wavelength and/or fluorescence intensity or reacting selenocysteine with a fluorescent dye under conditions such that the fluorescent dye reacts specifically with selenocysteine to change the fluorescence wavelength and/or fluorescence intensity, and determining the selenocysteine by measuring the fluorescence intensity. Also disclosed is a kit for evaluating the cystine uptake ability of a cell that includes a reducing agent for reducing selenocystine to selenocysteine, a fluorescent dye represented by general formula (I), and a pH 5.5-6.5 buffer.
