titleOfInvention Methods and apparatuses for treating stroke using low-frequency stimulation
abstract Methods and apparatuses for treating a patient having a brain lesion (e.g., a stroke patient) by applying a charge-balanced, low-frequency alternating current stimulation (ACS) to a region of the patient' s brain immediately before and/or during a directed movement. The charge- balanced, low-frequency ACS may have a depolarizing phase that is slower than the hyperpolarizing phase (e.g., the depolarizing phase may have a frequency of 15 Hz or less and the hyperpolarizing phase with a frequency greater than 15 Hz). The ACS stimulation field may be greater than 1.5 V/m. The ACS may be applied during a preferred excitation phase.
