abstract | A method for the preparation of an alpha-substituted carbonyl compound or an alpha- substituted nitrile compound carrying an aryl or heteroaryl group as an alpha-substituent, said method comprising reacting a sulfoxide compound S1 comprising a substituted aryl or heteroaryl group, wherein a sulfinyl moiety is attached to a carbon ring atom of an aromatic ring, with a reactant selected from the following reactants A1, A2 and A3: an alkyne compound A1, which is selected from an ynamide, an ynolether, a thioalkyne and an arylalkyne, in the presence of an acid selected from a Bronsted- and a Lewis acid; a carbonyl compound A2, which is selected from a tertiary carboxylic acid amide which carries at least one hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom in alpha-position to its carbonyl group and an aryl ketone which carries at least one hydrogen atom attached to a carbon atom in alpha-position to its carbonyl group, in the presence of an electrophilic activator; and a nucleophile A3, which is selected from a silyl enolether, an a-silyl nitrile, an a-stannyl nitrile, and a β-ketoester derivative, in the presence of an electrophilic activator; to yield an alpha-substituted carbonyl compound or nitrile compound wherein a carbon atom in alpha-position to the carbonyl group or the nitrile group, respectively, forms a bond with the carbon ring atom of the aromatic ring to which the sulfinyl moiety had been attached in the sulfoxide compound S1. |
