The invention relates to a photosensitizer (e.g. methylene blue or riboflavin) for use in a method of treatment of a pathogenic infection (e.g. viral infection, such as SARS-CoV-2). The methods generally involve contacting a pathogen with the photosensitizer, and subjecting the photosensitizer contacted pathogen to a light source. In one embodiment, said method of treatment comprises (i) contacting a pathogen residing in the oral cavity and/or pharynx of a patient in need thereof with the photosensitizer and (ii) subjecting the photosensitizer contacted pathogen to a light source. Other embodiments relate to topical application of the photosensitizer. |
