abstract An oil field tracer and a method for oil field tracing. The method for oil field tracing comprises the following steps: adding an oil field tracer to an oil field injection well, the oil field tracer comprising fluorescent carbon quantum dots; acquiring an oil-water mixture from an oil field production well; and performing analysis to determine whether the oil-water mixture contains fluorescent carbon quantum dots. In the method, detection of an oil field tracer is performed on an oil-water mixture from an oil field production well. The method is not limited by a ratio of oil to water in a sample obtained from an oil field production well, and can meet requirements of various oil field environments. A polar solvent is used to extract fluorescent carbon quantum dots from an oil-water mixture, such that a portion of fluorescent carbon quantum dots in oil can be transferred to the polar solvent to undergo detection, thereby preventing the problem of background substances in oil interfering with detection of fluorescent carbon quantum dots directly performed on oil.
