A cubic boron nitride sintered compact comprising more than 80 vol% and less than 100 vol% of cubic boron nitride particles and more than 0 vol% and less than 20 vol% of a binder phase. The binder phase includes at least one type selected from the group consisting of a monomer, an alloy, and an intermetallic compound, said monomer being selected from the group consisting of Group 4, Group 5, and Group 6 elements from the periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel. Alternatively, the binder phase includes: a compound comprising at least one type of element selected from the group consisting of Group 4, Group 5, and Group 6 elements from the periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel and at least one type of element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron, and oxygen; and at least one type selected from the group consisting of a solid solution derived from the compound. Alternatively, the binder phase includes at least one type selected from the group consisting of: at least one type selected from the group consisting of a monomer, an alloy, and an intermetallic compound, said monomer being selected from the group consisting of Group 4, Group 5, and Group 6 elements from the periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel; a compound comprising at least one type of element selected from the group consisting of Group 4, Group 5, and Group 6 elements from the periodic table, aluminum, silicon, cobalt, and nickel and at least one type of element selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, carbon, boron, and oxygen; and a solid solution derived from the compound. The dislocation density of the cubic boron nitride sintered particles is 1 × 10 15 /m 2 –1 × 10 17 /m 2 . |
