titleOfInvention | A microfluidic device for the POC detection of oleophilic biomarkers in hydrophilic analytes |
abstract | A microfluidic device comprises a microcuvette containing amicroemulsion hosting a specific reactant and indicator as the reactionmedium. The microcuvette hosts an emulsion of oil microdroplets dispersed in a mixture of aqueous buffer, alcohol and dye in which thedispersed oil phase enables the diffusion of the lipid molecules into thecontinuous alcohol phase. Once the aqueous polar analyte loaded withthe biomarker is dispensed into the microfluidic sensor, a specificenzymatic reaction between the biomarker in the analyte, e.g. lipase, and lipid molecules present in the continuous aqueous-alcohol phase ofthe microemulsion take place. Fatty acids produced by the reactioncause a pH variation of microemulsion detected with the help of a colorchange of an acid base indicator. The variation in the color change iscorrelated with the biomarker loading in the analyte detected using an optoelectronic arrangement. |
