The present invention provides a refractory material which does not impregnate a pitch or the like, and has high corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance as compared with an impregnated product such as a pitch. A refractory material that does not impregnate a tar or pitch, according to the present invention, is characterized by having, as physical property values of a refractory material sample which is heat-treated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at 1200 °C, an apparent porosity of at most 7%, the total pore volume of pores having a pore diameter of at most 1 μm of at least 80% with respect to the integrated pore volume of the entity of the refractory material sample, and a permeability of 50×10-17m2. |
