abstract | Provided is a liquid crystal aligning agent from which a liquid crystal alignment film, which is highly able to align liquid crystals, is obtained even when exposed to excessive heating. The liquid crystal aligning agent has a group represented by formula (1), and contains at least one polymer (P) selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor and a polyimide. [Formula 1] *-X1-Q-X2-Y-R (1) (in the formula, X1 represents a C1-C14 alkylene group, and one of the alkylene groups or two methylene groups which are not adjacent may be substituted with -O- or -COO-. X2 represents a single bond, -OCO-, -COO-, or CONR2- (R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group). Q represents a naphthylene group, and Y represents a group including at least one cyclohexylene group. Any hydrogen atom of the naphthylene group or the cyclohexylene group may be substituted with at least one selected from the group consisting of a C1-C3 alkyl group, a C1-C3 alkoxy group, a C1-C3 fluorine-containing alkyl group, a C1-C3 fluorine-containing alkoxy group, or a fluorine atom.
