abstract [Problem] The purpose of the present disclosure is to provide a magnetic recording medium that is thin overall and that has exceptional travel stability. [Solution] The present disclosure provides a tape-form magnetic recording medium including a magnetic layer, an underlayer, a base layer, and a back layer, the kurtosis of the magnetic-layer-side surface being 3.0 or greater, the kurtosis of the back-layer-side surface being 2.0 or greater, the arithmetic average roughness Ra of the magnetic-layer-side surface being 2.5 nm or less, the base layer including polyester as a main component, the average thickness tT of the magnetic recording medium being 5.6 μm or less, the magnetic recording medium including a lubricant, the lubricant containing a fatty acid and a fatty acid ester, the mass ratio of the fatty acid to the fatty acid ester (extracted by means of hexane) being less than or equal to 0.6, the magnetic recording medium having pores, and the average diameter of the pores being 6-11 nm (inclusive) when measured after the lubricant has been removed from the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic recording medium has been dried.
