abstract | Provided is a magnetic recording medium that can exhibit good running performance during use. The magnetic recording medium is tape-shaped and has: a substrate having polyester as a main ingredient thereof; a base layer provided on the substrate; a magnetic layer provided on the base layer; and a back layer provided on the reverse side of the substrate from the base layer. The kurtosis of the surface on the reverse side of the back layer from the substrate is 2.0 or greater, and recesses having a depth of greater than or equal to 20% of the average thickness of the magnetic layer are formed in the surface of the magnetic layer at a rate of from 10-200 recesses per 1600 µm2 area. The arithmetic mean roughness Ra of the surface of the magnetic layer is 2.5 nm or less, and after a lubricant has been removed and the magnetic recording medium has been dried, the whole of the magnetic recording medium has a BET specific surface area of 3.5 m2/g or greater. |
