abstract An orthodontic device and method for splinting and repositioning teeth in a dental arch of a patient. The method includes the steps of fixing a first orthodontic attachment/anchor unit to a first tooth in the dental arch; fixing a second orthodontic attachment/anchor unit to a second tooth in the dental arch; splinting the first and second teeth together by rigidly connecting the first and second orthodontic attachment/anchor units with a substantially rigid elongate splinting member thereby providing orthodontic anchorage; and applying a sequence of aligner trays engaging at least one of the first and second orthodontic attachment/anchor units and a third tooth in said dental arch so as to reposition said third tooth. The device provides an orthodontic attachment/anchor unit to be fixed to a tooth, the unit including a mounting portion, and projection extending transversely from the mounting portion, the projection and the mounting portion defining a longitudinal cavity extending in the mesial-distal direction along a cavity axis, wherein the cavity is provided with an opening and configured to receive and locate an elongate splinting member that extends longitudinally into the cavity through the opening. The attachment/anchor unit is intended for use with aligners or trays typically when it is desirable to not only reposition or straighten the anterior portion of the arch but also adjust the position of the molars and/or pre-molars.
