abstract | The present invention addresses the problem of providing a functional film having excellent low-voltage drive performance, high luminous efficiency, long service life, resistance against drive voltage fluctuations, and vapor deposition reproducibility, as well as a method for forming the same and an organic EL element. A functional film according to the present invention is characterized in that: the functional film contains an aromatic compound; the aromatic compound has four or more condensed aromatic ring groups containing 14 or more π electrons in a condensed or noncondensed, six-membered aromatic hydrocarbon ring or aromatic heterocyclic ring and has, as substituent groups, three or more of the condensed aromatic ring groups containing 14 or more π electrons such that the three or more groups are adjacent to one another; and regarding the aromatic compound, when the film density value calculated at 300 K by an NPT-ensemble molecular dynamics calculation is an initial film density value of the functional film, and the film density value calculated at 370 K is a post-storage film density value of the functional film that has been stored at the same temperature, the difference between the initial film density value and the post-storage film density value is equal to or less than 1% of the initial film density value. |
