titleOfInvention Carbon electrode material for manganese/titanium-based redox flow battery
abstract The present invention provides a carbon electrode material used for a negative electrode of a manganese/titanium-based redox flow battery with which it is possible to lower the cell resistance during initial charging/discharging and which has exceptional battery energy efficiency. A carbon electrode material for a manganese/titanium-based redox flow battery, the carbon electrode material being used in a negative electrode of a redox flow battery in which a manganese/titanium-based electrolytic solution is used, wherein the carbon electrode material is characterized in: comprising carbonaceous fibers (A), carbon particles (B) other than graphite particles, and a carbonaceous material (C) that binds the carbonaceous fibers (A) and the carbon particles (B); and satisfying the following requirements. (1) The carbon particles (B) other than graphite particles have a grain diameter of 1 μm or less. (2) Lc(B) is 10 nm or less, where Lc(B) is the size of crystallites in the carbon particles (B) other than graphite particles in the c-axis direction obtained by X-ray diffraction. (3) Lc(C)/Lc(A) is 1.0-5, where Lc(A) and Lc(C) are the sizes of crystallites in the carbonaceous fiber (A) and the carbonaceous material (C), respectively, in the c-axis direction obtained by X-ray diffraction. (4) The mesopore specific surface area derived from the nitrogen gas adsorption amount is 30 m2/g or higher. (5) The number of bonded oxygen atoms on the surface of the carbon electrode material is at least 1% of the total number of carbon atoms on the surface of the carbon electrode material.
