abstract The present invention provides: an organic compound which has a wide absorption in the near-infrared region, while exhibiting excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency in the near-infrared region; a near-infrared absorbing material which contains this compound; an organic thin film which contains this near-infrared absorbing material; and an organic electronic device and an organic photoelectric conversion element, each of which comprises this organic thin film. The description of the present application provides a compound which is represented by formula (1). (In formula (1), each of R 1 -R 12 independently represents a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy group, an alkylthio group, an aromatic group, a heterocyclic group, a halogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a mercapto group, a nitro group, a substituted amino group, a non-substituted amino group, a cyano group, a sulfo group or an acyl group, provided that at least one of the R 1 -R 4 moieties represents a group or atom other than a hydrogen atom and at least one of the R 5 -R 8 moieties represents a group or atom other than a hydrogen atom.)
