abstract The present invention addresses the problem of providing a novel metal surface treatment agent that can form a film, which is capable of maintaining antimicrobial performance, in or on the surface of a metal material. The abovementioned problem is solved by a metal surface treatment agent containing a prescribed copolymer (A) and a water-soluble or water-dispersible resin (B), the copolymer (A) being obtained by polymerizing the compound (a) represented by formula (1) (in formula (1), R1 and R2 independently represent hydrogen atoms or C1-4 alkyl groups, R3 and R4 independently represent C1-5 alkyl groups, and X- represents an ion of a halogen atom or an acid anion) and the compound (b) represented by formula (2) or formula (3) (in formula (2), R5 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R6 and R7 independently represent hydrogen atoms, C1-4 alkyl groups, benzyl groups, or C2 or 3 hydroxyalkyl groups; in formula (3), R8 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group).
