abstract An endoscope (10) is provided with: an insertion part (14) covered with an exterior tube (141) having an outer diameter of 1 mm or less; an observation optical system including a rectangular imaging element which is secured to the tip of the insertion part (14) and the length of one side of which is 60% or less of the outer diameter of the insertion part; an illumination fiber disposed between the inner surface of the exterior tube (141) and an edge of the observation optical system and passing through the exterior tube; a cable bundle connected to the imaging element and passing through the exterior tube; and a connector (27) to which the cable bundle and the illumination fiber are connected.
