abstract The present invention relates to an optical chemical sensor for measuring dissolved ammonia (70) concentration in a sample. The optical chemical sensor measures dissolved ammonia (70) concentration based on a Forster Resonance Energy Transfer or FRET effect. The optical chemical sensor comprises a chemical sensing membrane (100) attached to an optical waveguide with a photo-detector. The chemical sensing membrane (100) includes a fluorophore (40), an emeraldine salt and a membrane matrix (10), wherein the fluorophore (40) and the emeraldine salt are immobilized in the membrane matrix (10). The membrane matrix (10) immobilized with the fluorophore (40) and the emeraldine salt is disposed on a polyester substrate (20).
