abstract [Problem] To provide a novel and improved optical body, lighting device, and image display device that make it possible to improve uniform light distribution properties. [Solution] One aspect of the present invention provides an optical body in which a composite structure of a principal structure is continuously spread out within the plane of a substrate. The optical body is characterized in that the phase distribution of the principal structure within the plane of the substrate corresponds to an amplitude distribution that is obtained by performing a Fourier transform on a pupil function for a two-dimensional optical aperture. The optical body is also characterized by having a peak ratio value of no more than 2.5.
