The method of the present invention for producing a poly(arylene sulfide) (PAS) which has improved properties and a high nitrogen content, while reducing the formation of organic by-products, involves a plurality of reaction tanks which communicate with each other through a gas phase. The method comprises conducting a feed step, a dehydration step, a polymerization step, and a recovery step in parallel. A polar organic solvent, a sulfur source, and a dihaloaromatic compound are used as starting materials. The polar organic solvent as a starting material is fed in an amount of 5 mol or less per mol of the sulfur source as a starting material. The polar organic solvent has a bond represented by -RO-N-, where R is C or P. |
