abstract The invention relates to a disconnecting device (1) for a surge arrester (36), comprising a first housing (2), an explosive device (15), a triggering device (11,12,13,14,16) for the explosive device (15), and a second housing (10) which is arranged in the first housing (2) and comprises the explosive device (15) and the triggering device (11,12,13,14,16) such that a gas space surrounds the explosive device (15), wherein the second housing (10) is designed to tear upon the triggering of the explosive device (15), characterised in that a piston (4, 7) is designed to move inside the first housing (2), forming an isolating gap (21), when the second housing (10) tears, and that at least part of the inner side of the first housing (2), facing the isolating gap (21), comprises an arc-extinguishing material (3).
