A method for producing shortened anionically modified cellulose fibers having an average fiber length of from 1 μm to 500 μm (inclusive), which comprises a step wherein sugar chains of anionically modified cellulose fibers are cut by means of thermal decomposition under the temperature condition of from 50°C to 230°C (inclusive), and wherein the anionically modified cellulose fibers have an average fiber length of from 700 μm to 10,000 μm (inclusive). A dispersion containing fine cellulose fibers, which has low viscosity and excellent handling properties in spite of high concentration, is able to be prepared by using shortened anionically modified cellulose fibers that are obtained by the production method according to the present invention; and this dispersion is suitable for use in various industrial applications such as everyday sundries, household electrical appliance components, packaging materials for household electrical appliance components, automobile components and materials for three-dimensional modeling. |
