abstract The present invention addresses the problem of providing a method whereby, in synthesizing a 4,5-dicyano-2-(fluoroalkyl)imidazole using diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) as a starting material, the target compound can be synthesized at a high yield without requiring any complicated procedure. The method according to the present invention for synthesizing a 4,5-dicyano-2-(fluoroalkyl)imidazole comprises reacting a compound represented by formula (ii): Rf-COOH (ii) (wherein Rf represents a C1-10 fluoroalkyl group or a C3-10 fluorocycloalkyl group) or a salt thereof with a compound represented by formula (iii): X-R (iii) (wherein X represents Cl, Br or I, and R represents an optionally substituted C1-6 alkylsulfonyl group or an optionally substituted phenylsulfonyl group) and diaminomaleonitrile in a solvent in the presence or absence of a base.
