abstract The present invention relates to a device for displacing a volume of liquid. The device is formed mainly by a water-retaining polymer (20) contained in a receptacle (10) having a flexible wall that is semipermeable to water. The device increases in volume when submerged in a fluid, which increases the level of said fluid if the device is submerged in a tank containing same. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the water-retaining polymer (20) releases, in a controlled manner, a freshener or a water-soluble biocide. In view of the above, the present invention allows a saving in water consumption, being used in toilet cisterns or other devices that operate according to the level of a fluid.
