titleOfInvention Compositions and methods for determining avian influenza virus susceptibility
abstract Disclosed herein are methods for identifying an individual as being susceptible to an avian influenza H7N9 virus or not susceptible to an avian influenza H7N9 virus. In one aspect, the method may comprise the steps of a) contacting a saliva sample obtained from said individual with a probe comprising a head portion of the of hemagglutinin 1 (HA1) of the H7N9 Influenza A virus (the "H7 HA1 protein"); b) detecting the probe bound to a binding component in the saliva sample of an individual whose status is desired to be known, and characterizing the individual as having either a binder status or a nonbinder status based on the amount of probe bound to said binding component. In one aspect, a binder status indicates that the individual is susceptible to H7N9 infection; and a non-binder status indicates that the individual is not susceptible to H7N9 infection.
