abstract | The disclosure provides methods for making a quaternary ammonium compound, such as comprising: providing an amine composition comprising an amine of the formula R[CONH(CH2) n ] z N(R 1 )(R 2 ), wherein z is 0-1, n is 2-5, R is C 10 -C 22 alkyi or C 10 -C 22 alkylene, and R 1 and R 2 independently represent hydroxy C 1 -C 8 alkyi or C 1 -C 8 alkyi, wherein at least one of R 1 and R 2 is hydroxy C 1 -C 8 alkyi; a solvent with a solubility in water of less than 5 % by weight; and water; and adding to the amine composition an acid; and a C 1 -C 8 alkylene oxide to produce a reaction mixture. |
