The present invention addresses the problem of providing a polar compound which exhibits high chemical stability, high ability to align liquid crystal molecules, high solubility in a liquid crystal composition and a high voltage retention rate in a liquid crystal display element. A means for solving this problem is a compound represented by formula (1). For example, R 1 is an alkyl group having 1-15 carbon atoms; rings A 1 to A 5 are each independently a cyclohexyl ring or a phenyl ring; a, w, x and y are each independently 1 or 2; b, d, e, v and c are each independently 0 or 1, with the sum of b, d, e, v and c being 1; Z 1 to Z 4 are each independently an alkylene group having 1-6 carbon atoms; Sp 1 to Sp 3 and Sp 5 to Sp 7 are each independently an alkylene group having 1-5 carbon atoms; P 1 to P 6 are each independently a group represented by formula (1a); M 1 and M 2 are hydrogen; R 2 is a methyl group; P 3 is a group represented by formula (1b); M 3 and M 4 are hydrogen; Sp 4 is an alkylene group having 1-5 carbon atoms; and X 1 is -OH. |
