abstract A heated aerosol-generating article (10) comprises a rod of aerosol-generating substrate (12)(112), wherein the rod of aerosol-generating substrate (12)(112) comprises:a first plug of homogenised tobacco material (26)(126); and a second plug of homogenised tobacco material (28)(128). The first plug (26)(126) and the second plug (28)(128) are coaxially aligned, the first plug (26)(126) being provided downstream of the second plug(28)(128), and the first plug (26)(126) and the second plug (28)(128) differ from each other in at least one property of the homogenised tobacco material such that upon heating of the aerosol-generating substrate (12)(112), the first plug (26)(126) releases aerosol after a shorter time than the second plug (28)(128).
