abstract The fate and development of plant cells are modified by treating cells with cell reprogramming factors. The present invention relates to morphogenetic development genes that induce embryogenesis and are used as cell reprogramming factors, more specifically comprising polypeptides or polynucleotides encoding gene products capable of generating bihaploid or haploid plants from gametes. Corn microspores treated by contacting isolated cells with an exogenous, recombinant and purified embryogenic development-type gene-inducing embryogenesis gene generate embryogenesis. The gametes of the maize plant develop into embryoids when they are transformed using a genetic construct containing regulatory elements and structural genes capable of cascading to modify the cell fate of plant cells. The morphogenetic proteins of development expressed from a genetic construct according to the invention are used for ex situ treatment methods and for cell reprogramming in planta .
