abstract |
The present invention relates to a process for preparing 1,5-pentanediol from tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The method according to the invention comprises the steps of dehydrating tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) to obtain dihydropyran (DHP); hydrate at least a portion of the DHP to obtain 2-hydroxy-tetrahydropyran (2-HY-THP) in the presence of a solid acid catalyst; and hydrogenating at least a portion of the 2-HY-THP to obtain 1,5-pentanediol. The process can be entirely carried out in the absence of noble metal catalysts. |
