The invention relates to a composite fiber for suppressing swelling caused by water and having adsorption capacity not only of acidic substances, such as an anionic group-containing derivative, an oxyacid salt, an acidic protein containing many amino acids having a plurality of carboxyl groups, but also basic substances, such as a nitrogen compound and a basic protein containing many amino acids having a plurality of amino groups. A composite fiber according to one embodiment is formed by supporting, on the surface of a chitosan fiber, cellulose fibers having a type I crystal structure and having an anionic functional group. A process for producing a composite fiber according to one embodiment is a method for producing said composite fiber and comprises a step of obtaining a composite fiber by spinning an aqueous solution of chitosan salt in a liquid of coagulation which contains cellulose fibers and an alkaline substance. |
