abstract | The invention relates to a self-powered electrochromic display device. A first electrode layer, having a first redox potential, is disposed on a first substrate. The first electrode layer comprises a plurality of at least one electrochromic compound and a plurality of at least one first functional group. A pattern defining layer is provided on the first electrode layer. An electrolyte layer is disposed on the pattern defining layer. The electrolyte layer is in contact with the first electrode layer through the at least one opening. The electrolyte layer comprises a plurality of at least one second functional group. Some of said at least one second functional group are covalently linked with some of said at least one first functional group. A second electrode layer, having a second oxidation-reduction potential, is disposed on the electrolyte layer. Electrically shorting the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer via an external electrical switch causes the first electrode layer to change color on an area that overlaps the less an opening. Covalent bonds between chemical compounds of one layer with chemical compounds of another layer makes the adhesion stronger and thus improves the performance of the device. |
