abstract The present invention relates to recombinant microorganisms that express a subject polypeptide. The microorganisms may comprise an expression construct comprising a flagellin promoter operably linked to a heterologous nucleotide sequence encoding the subject polypeptide. The flagellin promoter sequence may comprise a genetic modification that reduces the inhibition of CsrA translation. The microorganisms may also include a genetic modification that reduces the FlgM inhibition of SigD transcription initiation. The target polypeptide may be an aldehyde dehydrogenase. These microorganisms are useful in the treatment of xylostomiasis due to alcohol.
