The present invention relates to a method of producing a barley plant producing at least one antimicrobial peptide, comprising the step of inserting, into the genome of the barley plant, a nucleotide sequence containing a coding sequence for an N-terminal signal peptide from a plant other than barley for the translocation of a peptide through the endoplasmic reticulum, and a sequence encoding at least one antimicrobial peptide selected from the group consisting of cathelicidines, defensins and magainins. The invention further relates to an appropriate expression cassette, the resulting barley plant, and a method of producing antimicrobial peptides involving said barley plants. |
