The positive electrode active material for an alkaline storage battery comprises: hydroxide particles containing at least soluble cobalt in solid solution in nickel; and a cobalt-containing coating layer coating the hydroxide particles, the cobalt contained in the coating layer and the cobalt contained in the hydroxide particles having diffraction peaks between 65 ° -66 ° diffraction angles represented by 2θ of a diffraction pattern obtained by measurement of X-ray diffraction.
