abstract The invention relates to a lithium metal phosphate, its preparation and its use in a process for the production of lithiated iron phosphate coated with particulate carbon comprising a grinding step and a calcination step. The process utilizes polyvinyl butyral having a molecular weight distribution such that at least 75% of the polyvinyl butyral has a molecular weight in the range of 30000 to 90000 as a precursor containing carbon and dehydrated iron phosphate as a precursor containing iron. The process allows the formation of lithium iron phosphate having improved electrochemical properties.
